Energy Is Everywhere: How to Shift, Cultivate, and Protect Yours
Energy is everywhere. All of the time.
To cultivate and shift energy, we have to learn how to tap into our inner well, borrow from others when we’re running low, and protect our reserves.
The Power of Collective Energy
I often open my eyes during ecstatic dance and am moved to happy tears by the joy and energy that I witness. I wish everyone could experience this.
If you've ever been to a concert or a sporting event, you've probably felt the effects of collective energy. The way an entire stadium holds its breath before an overtime goal. The way a singer's voice can send chills down your spine. The way the entire crowd at a wedding erupts in joy during the Horah, lifting the couple high above their heads.
If you've ever attended a big yoga class where everyone is flowing and breathing together, you know what I’m talking about. Maybe you've been to the Kotel on a Friday night, where voices rise in prayer and song, or sat around a Shabbat table, feeling the warmth of connection. These moments remind us of something profound: we are not just individuals moving through the world. We are energy in motion, connected to something larger than ourselves.
Your Inner Light: Tending to Your Energy
Each one of us has a light within. In Jewish thought, this is the Ner Tamid, the eternal flame, the spark of divinity we carry inside us.
This light—our energy, our prana, our chi, our life force—naturally ebbs and flows. Some days it burns brightly; other days, it flickers. And that’s okay. The key is knowing how to tend to it.
Sometimes that means protecting our energy: setting boundaries, saying no to what drains us, choosing rest. Sometimes it means actively cultivating it: movement, breathwork, time in nature, nourishing foods. And sometimes, it means borrowing energy from others: being around people who uplift us, listening to music that stirs our soul, immersing ourselves in spaces that radiate joy.
Borrowing and Returning Energy
The keyword there is borrowing. Because the implication is that you will return the energy at some point—whether to the source that supported you or by rippling that good out into the world.
Think about the friend who always makes you laugh when you're feeling low. Or the dog that greets you with boundless excitement, reminding you of joy in its purest form. Or the song that shifts your mood within the first few notes. Energy moves. And when you receive it, you have the power to pass it forward.
Shifting Your Energy: Simple Practices
If you find yourself feeling low, scattered, or drained, here are some ways to shift your energy:
Move your body in a way that feels good (dance, stretch, walk, surf—whatever feels natural and joyful to you).
Spend time in the right environments (seek out places and people that lift you up rather than deplete you).
Start your day with intention (a morning routine that includes gratitude, music, or deep breathing can set the tone).
Tackle something small and concrete (completing even one tiny task can create momentum).
Borrow energy when you need to (from community, from music, from movement, from nature—energy is everywhere, all the time).
Your energy is everything. Learn to protect it, cultivate it, and use it to create a life that fuels you.
